Electric Wire Hustle

The other day I got my hands on a compilation CD made by Sarah, the voice of Barcelona’s coolest duo Beatspoke, through a mutual friend of ours (cheers Jody), and discovered another one of the bands that are rocking New Zealand at the moment: Electric Wire Hustle. The production trio from Wellington (Mara TK, Taay Ninh and Myele Manzanza) makes music that grabs your insides and gets everything bobbing to fat beats, cool synths, irresistible dubby bass lines and soulful vocals. A futuristic take on hip hop and soul that flys up from a solid grounding in what has come before. Deeply modern musicians with an eponymous debut LP worth the detour and more.

Mara TK you might have already crossed laying down his vocals on a couple of the tracks in Julien Dyne‘s remarkable first album Pins & Digits (already featured in this blog). Dyne is another of the artists making a noise in New Zealand, which despite the geographical distances involved, has been arriving loud and clear this side of the world. His work with Fat Freddy’s Drop or Parks, to mention but two in a long list, have attracted the attention of critics and music-lovers alike.

Speaking of Parks, he produced the latest album by Ladi6 Time Is Not Much which is being (re)released by the BBE record label in July 2010. She is on tour in Europe at the mo’ and will be performing in Paris for the Fête de la Musique on 21st June. One not to miss. So, if you can’t make it over to Auckland to check them out, keep listening to Future Beats every day from 13:00 to 14:00!

Julien Dyne: the funky face of New Zealand

Lunes, 19 de abril de 2010

If you thought that New Zealand was just about breath-taking landscapes, tribal rugby and being a long way away, take a listen to this: “Pins & Digits” by Julien Dyne, the best thing to have come out of there since Fat Freddy’s Drop (and yes, he has worked with them too). Drummer, DJ and producer, this is his first album (released by BBE) following his highly acclaimed Phanton Limbo EP, and a very impressive affair it is too. Rhythmically creative, with chopping and changing tempos, Julien never loses the funky beat that holds it all together. Just like the amazing track “Layer” implies, with vocals by fellow Kiwi Mara TK, this is all about sonic strata and Dyne is proving himself  formidably nifty at creating tunes to get high on, always well accompanied by many of the brightest buttons from the scene that is rocking New Zealand at the mo’ (Lewis McCallum, Jeremy Toy from Opensouls and Parks from Ladi6 to name but a few).

Needless to say, “Layer” is regularly aired on Future Beats on www.gladyspalmera.com
