Día 2

Thierry Paret de Radio Nova

Thierry Paret de Radio Nova

Escucha el programa (en francés):

primera hora

segunda hora

¡a seguir!

Always remember…siempre me acordaré, Gil

Miércoles, 5 de mayo de 2010

I will always remember this day – the 4th May 2010 – when I met, spoke to, interviewed and hugged Gil Scott Heron. I know, I sound like an adolescent groupie but you have to understand, this man is a living legend, he has moved and inspired generations of people, musicians, activists, dreamers and doers, people, like you and me, with his poetry, his music and his voice. Oh, that voice. That voice, that even after so many years of painful self-destruction in alcohol and drugs (the tragedy of so many of the most sensitive amongst us) maintains its tone, its strength, its magic to fill us with emotion and send us to unchartered heights.

When he stepped out of the taxi, I literally couldn’t find anything to say. There’s always a first time! Tall, very slim, with his cap falling over his eyes, I could almost touch his aura, his charisma.

He had accepted to come to the radio to meet a young documentary film-maker, Guillermo Lopez, who had written to him when in prison, five or so years ago. Guillermo is a friend of the radio’s and it was thanks to him that Gil agreed to the interview, the only one he agreed to in Barcelona! An exclusive with Gil Scott Heron – once in a lifetime.

I had no idea what sort of a man I would be meeting and talking to…would he be shy, haughty, arrogant, crazy? None of those things. Gil is a funny (very funny), warm, easy going and sincere person.

I think it comes through in his music. And in his words.

Don’t miss the exclusive with Gil Scott Heron in Radio Gladys Palmera, coming very soon! Keeping checking the web for more info…

Gil, this is how I remember you….

Jueves, 22 de abril de 2010

This is how I remember you, Gil, back in 1990 in Manchester’s Nia Centre, or later at Paris’ temple to the best in music, the New Morning, when you could hear a pin drop as you intoned “The Revolution Will Not be Televised”, when you sat at your keyboards and sang “The Bottle” with a bottle nestling against your feet, but it didn’t matter because the vibration of your voice and the power of your words were enough, were more than enough, to have everyone’s skin trembling with emotion and every heart aching with love for you, the greatest of our time.

And now you are back, with a new album “I’m New Here” (XL Recordings), seeking redemption, peeling off the layers that you thought would protect you but didn’t. Back from the depths of a tormented soul that you now bear to your people, to those who have followed you and mourned you and who still love you, awaiting you with bated breath because your voice, your essence, has not changed, the fire is still there, the same vibration and the same power to move us.

We’ll be seeing you soon here in Barcelona….

Gil Scott Heron, 4 abril 2010 en la Sala Bikini de Barcelona, 5 abril 2010 en la Sala Joy Eslava de Madrid.
